IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM): The Conceptual Foundation of the Next Generation of Bibliographic Data

Why should every knowledge organization professional know LRM?

For more than two decades, the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) family shaped cataloguing theory. However, the emergence of Linked Data, the Semantic Web, and machine-processable metadata revealed limitations in maintaining separate conceptual models. In response, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) introduced the IFLA Library Reference Model (LRM), a unified conceptual model that consolidates FRBR, FRAD, and FRSAD into a coherent framework (Riva et al., 2018/2024).

Rather than being merely another cataloguing model, LRM represents a conceptual shift in how bibliographic information is understood. It provides a semantic foundation for modern standards such as RDA, facilitates interoperability with Linked Data technologies, and supports the creation of knowledge graphs and AI-ready bibliographic datasets (Riva et al., 2018/2024).

What Makes LRM Different?
One of the most significant innovations of LRM is the introduction of the super-entity Res, representing anything that can be discussed. Every entity within the model—including Works, Persons, Places, and Timespans—is a specialization of Res. This abstraction simplifies semantic modelling and enables greater consistency across bibliographic data.

LRM also introduces Agent as a generalized entity encompassing both persons and collective agents. Additionally, entities such as Place and Time-span, previously treated merely as descriptive values in many cataloguing environments, become fully defined entities capable of participating in semantic relationships.

These enhancements make LRM substantially more suitable for Linked Data environments than previous FR models (Riva et al., 2018/2024).

Why Does LRM Matter in the AI Era?
Artificial intelligence systems increasingly depend on structured, semantically rich metadata rather than isolated textual records.

LRM contributes to this transformation by:

supporting semantic interoperability;

enabling graph-based knowledge representation;

improving machine understanding of bibliographic relationships;

facilitating metadata reuse across repositories;

serving as the conceptual basis for modern cataloguing standards such as RDA.

As libraries transition from record-based catalogues to interconnected knowledge graphs, LRM becomes the conceptual language that allows machines to interpret bibliographic information rather than merely store it.

Why It Matters
LRM should not be viewed simply as a replacement for FRBR. Instead, it represents the conceptual infrastructure required for libraries to participate in the Semantic Web. As knowledge organization increasingly intersects with artificial intelligence, linked data, and digital cultural heritage, understanding LRM is becoming an essential competency rather than a specialist topic.
